Catheter Laser Alignment Fixture
Customer Need:
We listened to the customer and they had a medical device application needing a power calibration tool for a laser welding system. They had a system custom designed that did not provide a suitable method to measure laser output. To measure, one had to move the laser—potentially taking it out of calibration. We started from an existing tool and a design specification that TriAxial created based on verbal guidance from the customer.
Added Value:
Working with the customer, we developed a concept based on their guidance. We held many reviews that led the team to conclude that the approach conceived by the customer still did not optimally meet the objective. As a team, we reverted back to the functional requirements. Then, with a workable requirement, the design solution became clear. Further reviews of concepts led to a design that met the objectives.
Result:
Our deliverable was a complete design that was simple, elegant, and inexpensive. We were reminded as a team to focus on the functional requirements and to have design specifications develop from them. The Customer was satisfied with the design solution and acknowledged that TriAxial was provided less-than-optimal design guidance at the start. Since then, our projects together have benefited from that learned experience and results have been even better.
